Fresno Chaffee Zoo

Press Release Date:
May 22, 2021

May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, a perfect time to recognize and thank our partners at The Fresno Center

The Fresno Center provides a wide range of services throughout Fresno County to help individuals become self-sufficient, self-fulfilled and productive members of the community. Samnang Heng is a Cultural Broker in the Fresno Center’s Holistic Culture and Education Wellness Center where his role is to provide referrals to and resources for culturally competent services for everything from health services to immigration services.

With their leadership and connections throughout our local community, Samnang and The Fresno Center have been invaluable resources to Fresno Chaffee Zoo as we work to accurately represent and celebrate Southeast Asian culture in our Kingdoms of Asia project. The Fresno Center got involved to provide cultural understanding and to help all aspects of the exhibit meet cultural competency.  They also invited Khmer community leaders into the project and provided feedback on culturally appropriate interpretive elements. Recently, Samnang and other Fresno Center staff visited the Zoo to see construction progress on the project.

We look forward to our continuing partnership with The Fresno Center through the Kingdoms of Asia project and beyond. #AAPIHeritageMonth
